'winter wrap up' a quick Christmas challenge game

in other news, the my little game dev room is having another competition; in this case its the 'Christmas typhoon challenge'. it involves making a (winter and pony themed) game in 4 days...

anyway this is my entry for the Christmas typhoon challenge.

its a first person sandbox game, that takes place in the annual winter wrap up!
you can choose to play as an earth pony, unicorn or pegasus (each with special abilities).
the whole goal of the game is to get XP.
you get XP by clearing snow and performing actions.

more information and controls are in the readme that's with the game.

current download link:
http://www.mediafire.com/?1vbbxyg90xpus06

even though its technically done, ill do like with the unknown and make some later updates to fix things.

so its pretty much a game where you do whatever you want, not that many goals or challenges.

but still quite fun none the less!

anyway as always give the game a go and let me know what you think :)
also let me know if you find any bugs :(

aaaaand screen shots!

Update! - 1.9.1 (soundless)

IT IS DONE (sort of)

download here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?kn80zzg8f1o465c

this version has everything ive added since the original release.
most of all it has things like pausing, restarting, menu, toggle-able cheats, mouse control, HUD.

there is no sound yet, that will be added in the final release!

since its not quite full ironed out, there are still a few common issues:

-melee flash doesn't visually show
-no damage animation
-no death animation

(both of which can be fixed by re opening the game)
-jolty mouse movement
-LAG
(might just be me, but it isn't too bad most of the time)
(note you can scale the window down to reduce lag)

full change-log:

1.9.1:

added HUD
added main menu
added pause feature
added restart feature
added mouse control
added melee flash attack
added optional cheats

changed unknown design
changed the god dam FOV again
changed fog
changed the intro triggering system completely

removed all sound
put back intro quote

bug fixed'

It Begins

ah yes, the joys of making a new blog.
for people who dont know me from other places here is some basic information about me:

well im a rather lazy game developer. im an avid fan of my little pony (aint we all?) and i spend my days slaving on blender, playing red dead redemption and every now and then doing something actually useful.

im currently working on two games:

the unknown (3D, survival, creepy-pasta)
and Appleloosan (3D, free roam, western)

both of which are made using the BGE (blender game engine) and have their corresponding blogs.

So, you can contact me through deviant art:

My little game dev forums:

or you can find me on steam:

the point of this blog is to show news, information, updates and download links surrounding my game 'the unknown (considering that before now it was considerably hard to even get a download link..).

so ill try to post as much as possible so check back here for updates and such!

Ok, well lets begin...
(all of this is in the read me)

*******

SHIFT - run
S - turn 180'
F - drop flare
SPACE - jump (or skip intro)
UP,DOWN - look up and down (while still)

*******

story:
you have been teleported to a strange place, in the snowy mountains.
after you wake up and dust yourself off, you notice a pair of small red lights far in the distance.
you begin to walk towards them, they remain still.
in the corner of your eye you see another pair of similar lights,
and then another
and another.
your walk becomes a run.
you realise they are venerable to light, you manage to find some old flares near where you woke up.
the creatures seem to simply disappear when you light the flares near them.
but there are just too many,
too many eyes.
as the night rolls on, you run, you fight, you scream.
but there are just to many,
too many eyes.
you all ready know how this night will end.
TL,DR = your f*cked

********

how do i even?
you can walk or run around the map, turn your torch on and off, and pick up items.
the frozen creatures that follow you are 'the unknown' you can see them in the distance by their glowing red eyes.
if you are facing them, they will remain still (most of the time), if you look away they will move towards you.
if they get too close they will attack, causing you damage (which is shown by the amount of ice on your screen).
you can survive 4 hits from an unknown, on the fifth you will be killed and will be prompted to exit the game.
every minute the world will be re-filled with unknown, regardless of how many you kill.
after roughly 5 minutes the number of spawning unknowns will triple.
after 6 minutes, well, if you make it that far you will find out.
you can also drop flares to cause near unknown to vanish (you have limited flares, you can pick up more flares around the map).
your health can be re-filled by picking up a health kit (health kits will still be used up even if you have full health).
pretty much you keep playing till you die (or reach 6 minutes..), so find a game play style that suites you an TRY TO STAY ALIVE!

*******

tips:
-unknown move slightly faster than you walk speed, but slower than your run speed.
-unknown will not spawn until you are 20 seconds into the game.
-you start the game with 5 flares.
-full health = 5.
-flares and health kits con be found all around the map.
-unknown will NOT spawn on the mountain or the ice lakes, but they can easily get there.
-flares will die out after 10 seconds.
-the map does have bounds, but there is one place where you can get through them...
-unknown don't all ways stop moving when you look at them, so be careful.
-all ways look behind you.
-a new wave of unknown will spawn every minute.
-if you survive more than 6 minutes... ... congratulations.
-'don't be shy, look em' in the eye!'.
-don't stop moving, unless you know your safe.
-don't look directly at the bugs
-unknown have a nasty habit of hiding behind trees.
-this game is in fact, fun.
-this game is in no way a direct copy of slender.
-look for the biggest tree on the map.
-use health kits and flares wisely.
-try scaling down the window to make the game less laggy.
-you can skip the intro by pressing space.
-if your a lazy bastard, you can just camp at the top of the mountain where nothing can get you.
-real men play this game with the lowest brightness, and no torch.
-cant see anything but white text in the intro? try changing the brightness.
-rarity is best pone.

*******

extra stuff:
there should be two versions of the game available, one with normal graphics and one with low quality graphics.
the low quality graphics version has no grass, no bushes, lower resolution textures, no shaders, and no normal maps.
this version has a much better frame rate.
the files 'map icons' & 'map clear' show a birds eye view of the games map.
'map icons' also shows item spawn, unknown spawn and player spawn locations (consider looking at this map cheating!).
please watch the intro video, it took a while to make.
otherwise you can press space to skip it.
this game was made by Jach Marsdonpone (jack huygens), and good luck at trying to steal it.
around 15-18 hours was spent making this game.
this game was made fully in blender and uses the blender game engine.
